QUALIA

Q&A

Common questions about privacy, AI, sharing, and how Qualia works.

What is the difference between the Private button and the AI button on an entry?

They are two separate controls.

Private (the lock icon) makes the whole entry private. It stays on your personal Wall and in Today, but it is excluded from Atlas, the Weekly Fold, sharing, publishing, search previews, notifications, and any server-side processing. If you tap it again, the entry unlocks and returns to normal.

AI on/off only controls whether AI is allowed to read this entry. With AI off, the entry is still searchable, shareable, and visible in your personal archive; it is just skipped by AI summaries, reflections, transcription, and the Weekly Fold. When AI is off, the entry stays in your own hands.

Who can see my journal entries?

Only you by default. Your daybook entries, photographs, voice memos, and Marginalia notes are private to your account unless you choose to share or publish them.

Sharing is always opt-in: you can share a single entry with another Qualia user, or share it to a Tribe (Shared Qualia Group). You can also publish a snapshot to a public page, but that is a deliberate action you take from each entry.

Is Qualia using my journal to train AI?

No. Your journal is not used to train AI models, and it is not used to train anyone else's model.

When you use an AI feature, only the specific content needed for that feature is sent through the Lovable AI Gateway. The result is returned to you and stored in your account, but the content itself is not retained by the AI provider for training. You can switch AI off entirely from your Profile at any time.

How do AI defaults work?

Most AI features in Qualia are off by default and require you to turn them on. The exception is Marginalia, where the AI study feature is on by default so you can reflect on what you read.

New journal entries and voice memos default to AI off unless you have explicitly enabled an entry-reading AI feature. You can always toggle AI on or off for each individual entry before saving it.

Can I share a post with other Qualia users?

Yes. You can share an entry directly with another Qualia user, or share it to a Tribe (Shared Qualia Group). Each share has privacy controls: you can restrict who can reshare it, and you can revoke a share at any time.

What is Marginalia?

Marginalia is a place for everything you consume from the digital world: articles, links, YouTube videos, and other text you paste in.

You can highlight passages, write handwritten-style notes in the margins, and keep a reading shelf. The AI study feature can summarize themes and blind spots across your Marginalia if you choose to use it.

What is the Weekly Fold?

The Weekly Fold is a once-a-week snapshot of your entries and tag patterns. It shows your week summarized, what is still open, and factual tag counts over time. You can archive a fold and look back at past weeks.

How do I export or delete my data?

Open the Profile panel from the bottom right corner of the app. There you will find options to export your data and to delete your account.

Export is provided as a downloadable archive of your entries, photos, and tags. Account deletion removes your data from Qualia as soon as technically possible.

Can I use Qualia on mobile?

Yes. Qualia is a web app that works as a PWA. On iPhone or iPad, open Qualia in Safari, tap the Share button, then choose Add to Home Screen. This gives you an app-like icon and a full-screen experience without needing the App Store.

How do I contact support?

For account or data questions, reach out from the Profile panel in the app, or email [your-email@example.com].
